MONTREAL—Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin has announced it has been hired by the U.K. government to consult on industrial decarbonization for sites across the country as part of government’s Industry of Future Programme.
As engineering delivery partner, Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, will work with up to 16 industrial sites to develop “roadmap” plans that would help to accelerate their progress towards net-zero emissions by 2050, a release explained.
SNC-Lavalin’s focus in the program will be on energy-intensive industrial sites classed as Hard to Abate, such as chemical plants and the paper and ceramics industries. The roadmaps will consider decarbonization options for each individual site, including new technologies such as carbon capture utilization and storage as well as the feasibility of fuel switching, retrofits and upgrades, process changes and energy optimization.
SNC-Lavalin will use its own technology and tools to help analyze carbon, cost and engineering programs and identify the optimal roadmaps for each industrial site.
The contract is with the government’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
“To accelerate the rate of industrial decarbonization, we need to test and implement a whole range of technology and tools, from proven solutions to trialling new equipment,” stated Chris Ball, the firm’s managing director of nuclear and power EMEA, in a statement. “Decarbonizing industrial plants and processes is a complex challenge – there is no single approach that will work for all sites and sectors.
“Robust, implementable roadmaps that consider both the engineering solutions and the cost viability of reaching net zero will be critical to achieve this.”
